Management Consulting is one of the rare professions that has both an international code of ethics and an international standard of competence. When you see the initials CMC following a consultant's name, it means that he or she is a Certified Management Consultant and has met strict certification requirements of the Institute of Management Consultants in his or her country. Every three years these institutes submit to an assessment by the International Council of Management Consulting Institutes to ensure that the CMC is awarded only to consultants that have met world-class standards of competence, ethics and independence. Michael Shays, a CMC since 1973, is one such authorized ICMCI assessor.

ICMCI, The International Council of Management Consulting Institutes is the global association of national management consulting institutes from around the world. These national institutes administer, in accordance with world class standards, the international "CMC" certification Certified Management Consultant) earned by individual professional management consultants. To become a participant of ICMCI, the individual consultant must first be a member of the Institute represented by ICMCI in his or her country, or if none exists, then in another country in the region.
